Indianapolis Colts v Jacksonville Jaguars

It’s fitting that as the calendar flips to October the first opponent for the Colts during this spooky stretch on the calendar is none other than the Jaguars in Jacksonville.  The NFL, though likely completely unintentional, hit the nail on the head with the placement of this game.  The Colts had owned the Jaguars throughout the majority of their existence but then something flipped in the rivalry and the Colts have been unable to get over the hump of beating the Jaguars on the road.  The Colts haven’t won there since 2014 and are an almost hard to believe 0-9 in their last nine meeting in Jacksonville.

It’s not like the Jaguars have been the cream of the crop in the AFC or the Colts have been in a huge valley.  For the most part, they’ve been relatively even but for whatever reason the Jaguars have just gotten the best of the Colts each and every time.  It’s puzzling losing streak, much like the season opening losing streak that remains intact, at least for another year.  Why can’t the Colts get the best of them?

The way the season has started for the Jaguars you would think this Sunday would be the best opportunity for the Colts to finally snap that losing skid.  Unfortunately, we know that the Colts are banged up beyond belief right now.  Not only are Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor currently dealing with injuries with their status uncertain for Sunday, but the team placed defensive end Tyquan Lewis on injured reserve.  The Colts could potentially be entering Jacksonville without their starting quarterback and running back to face a desperate Jaguars squad looking for their first win of the season.  I think both will be available for the Colts but how much can each contribute is another story.

I want to think the Colts can get their stuff together and finally break the streak against a woeful Jags squad, but how many times have we said that in previous seasons?  Doug Pederson is on the hot seat, Trevor Lawrence seems to be regressing and the defense doesn’t appear to be nearly as good as it has been before.  Thus, an 0-4 Jaguars squad is seeing their season quickly slip away, making them all the more desperate for a win on Sunday.  The Jaguars fans are fully aware of their winning streak over the Colts as well.  It may as well be their Super Bowl in October because they will try to be as big of a factor in Sunday’s result as the players on the field.

I want to believe the Colts go into Jacksonville and win on Sunday.  I want that streak to end and to feel good about getting a big divisional hurdle out of the way.  But we’ve been here before.  We’ve seen them fall on their collective face.  Hopefully, Sunday will be different than the last nine matchups.  It would be a nice change of pace.
