Listen Live

Kelsea Ballerini kicked off her official coaching debut on The Voice Season 27 with a moment she’ll never forget.

During the premiere episode on Monday, Feb. 3, the country star was left in awe when a contestant delivered a heartfelt rendition of her song, Penthouse.

A Stunning Performance That Had Ballerini Jumping Out of Her Seat

Twenty-five-year-old Angie Ray, a Florida native currently living in Nashville, took center stage in a sleek white mini dress and over-the-knee boots. As she started singing Penthouse, Ballerini’s reaction was immediate—she nearly jumped out of her seat in excitement and turned to fellow coach Michael Bublé, exclaiming, “This is my song!”

Bublé, taken by surprise, responded, “This is you?” before turning his attention back to Ray’s mesmerizing vocals. Ballerini, visibly moved, turned her chair midway through the first chorus, securing Ray as a member of her team.

An Emotional Connection Between Artist and Contestant

After rushing onstage to hug Ray, Ballerini thanked her for choosing to perform Penthouse.

“I literally said before you came out, I had a good feeling about this,” she admitted.

“That is so scary. I was terrified,” Ray responded.

Ballerini reassured the nervous contestant, saying, “That’s scary for me because you’re hitting notes that I don’t hit in that song! Thank you so much for singing that. I could tell you were nervous, but this industry is nerve-wracking. When you push through it, it’s worth it.”

A Perfect Match for Team Ballerini

Since Ray received only one chair turn, there was no need for her to deliberate on which team to join.

However, even if multiple coaches had turned, she made it clear that her decision would have remained the same.

“I love John, and I love Michael, and I love Adam, but they’re not Kelsea, you know what I mean?” Ray shared with a smile.

Ballerini, full of confidence, replied, “And they’re not.” She then inquired, “Wow, man. Do you write songs?”

Ray confirmed, “I do, yeah. I’m a songwriter.”

“I can tell by the way you sang certain phrases in that song,” Ballerini noted.

“Even the way I recorded it is different from how I sing it live because it’s such an emotional story.”
