Over one-third of people are giving prospective employers references that will not vouch for them or tell the employer to run in the other direction! The study found that the most common problem with references was that the job-seekers never asked the person to be a reference so it was a surprise to them when they got a call. I worked with a guy one time who was a really bad employee and when he left he asked if he could use me as a reference. I didn’t know what to say but thankfully I never got a call from anyone!
