How is Anthony Richardson viewed outside Indianapolis?

Within Indianapolis, most Colts fans have confidence that Anthony Richardson will evolve into the next franchise quarterback.

There will always be a small group of fans that don’t believe that Richardson is the quarterback of the future. Most people in this category point towards his inaccuracies and inability to stay on the field so far.

The former Florida Gator has started and finished just four of the possible twenty-three games to this point. If you’re a percentages person, that is 17.4% of potential games played. I do not believe that there is another quarterback in NFL history that has had issues staying on the field like Richardson has.

On Sunday, Indianapolis will play on FOX and Kevin Kugler will be the play-by-play broadcaster for the game. He joined Query & Company on Thursday afternoon and talked to Jake Query & Jimmy Cook about Anthony Richardson.

“I don’t think the volume of work is enough to make a real judgement on it. I want to see him string together a lengthy array of games. The interception numbers are too high, everyone knows that. You cannot turn over the ball consistently in this league and expect to win. I’m sure that’s been a great topic for Colts fans this week, that Flacco has only had the one pick and seven touchdowns as the debate rages as to whether or not you stay with the old veteran or go back to the young quarterback. From what I have seen from him, there’s clearly upside there. It’s just a matter of does he get enough consistent reps, game action, to develop into the kind of NFL quarterback that the Colts are certainly hoping he will over the course of time.”

This kind of thought goes back to the preseason when the Colts were taking on the Cincinnati Bengals. Remember when Kirk Herbstreit casually threw out there the idea of turning to Joe Flacco is Richardson didn’t play well?

I don’t think it’s too crazy to be in this camp now that Flacco has played well for the Colts. It’s not his fault that the defense could not get one stop against Jacksonville. He managed the game well against Tennessee to secure the win, but did not play stellar.

If Richardson does not progress when he returns from his oblique injury, then will Shane Steichen turn to Flacco? I highly doubt it, but this is a what have you done for me lately league. Fans and owners want their team’s to succeed. Especially a franchise that hasn’t hosted a playoff game in 10 years.
