Country music fans in Houston, Texas, were treated to a special moment when Chris Stapleton headlined Minute Maid Park. The night was made even more memorable when fellow country star Miranda Lambert, who opened the show, joined Chris onstage for a live performance of their duet “What Am I Gonna Do.”
This marked the first time the pair performed the song live together, and the crowd was captivated. The duet is the opening track from Chris’s 2023 album Higher. “What Am I Gonna Do” explores the pain and heartbreak of a relationship’s end, with Chris’s character struggling to move on from a lost love.
The lyrics capture his torment as he drinks to numb the pain, unable to imagine life without her:
“Been drinkin’ everything on that shelf
Feels like I’m killin’ myself
You’re gone, and it hurts like hell
Wishin’ I was anybody else
What am I gonna do
When I get over you?
What am I gonna be
When you’re just a memory?
What am I gonna drink?
When I don’t have to think
About what I’m gonna do
Without you?”
This live duet was the perfect opportunity to experience the raw emotion of “What Am I Gonna Do” in a new way, showcasing why both Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert are two of country music’s most beloved artists. This is what country music is all about.
