According to a new study, the majority of the time, increasing the intensity of your effort at work can have this kind of effect on your career.

A negative one

This study found that the harder people worked and the more intense their effort, the more likely they were to damage their careers. Researchers found that the added stress and fatigue from working harder made people less productive and more likely to burn out more quickly. They also found that supervisors rarely noticed the extra effort that was the cause of the stress and only noticed the negative effects. So, just as you have suspected, if you want to get ahead at work, stop trying so hard! Slack off and succeed!
