The first time this happened at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was on Saturday, May 29, 1915.

A race was completely postponed by rain

The 1915 Indianapolis 500 was moved from Saturday, May 29th to Monday, May 31st due to rain. There were only two other times, in 1986 and 1997, that the race was completely moved to a different day because of rain. Several other years saw partial delays or rain shortened races. Yesterday’s postponement of the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard was the first time this has happened in its 25 year history. Gates open a t 9 a.m. today and the race will get underway at 2 p.m.!
