He was originally named Michael after his father, until his father traveled to Germany in 1934 and came back deciding to change both of their names.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born with the first name Michael, after his father, and no middle name. In 1934, his father traveled to Germany where he visited sites associated with Martin Luther, leader of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. The elder King returned to the United States and changed both his and his son’s names. The younger King was five at the time but his official birth certificate was not updated until he was 28.
